Dr. Portteus is a psychiatrist, certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.  In addition to medical school, he completed a residency in psychiatry and a two-year fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry.  He is a member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists.

He has extensive experience working with the psychiatric and emotional needs of children and their families, and he has been widely recognized for his scholarship and clinical work. Before he started private practice, Dr. Portteus served as Medical Director of Psychiatric Consult Services at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas from 2002 through 2006.   In addition to private practice, he currently serves as a consultant to Salesmanship Club Youth and Family Centers,  Parkland COPC Pediatrics Clinics, and the Dallas Independent School District.  

Before entering private practice, Dr. Portteus was on faculty of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas where he instructed medical students and resident physicians about psychiatric interviewing, diagnosis, and treatment.  He has spoken at local and nation meetings on topics ranging from pediatric depression to ADHD to medical ethics.  Additionally, he has published in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry regarding antidepressant medications in youth.  Dr. Portteus is an experienced therapist and is also an expert in the use of psychiatric medications in children and adults.
